Belitung Islands

Belitung is a large Indonesian island, about 4,500 km² (1,740 sq mi). Together with nearby Bangka and other small islands, it forms a sizable province. Once known for tin mining, Belitung is now better known for nature. Its beaches are marked by striking granite boulders along shallow shores, sometimes house-sized, contrasting with white sand. In the clear water, swimming and snorkeling reveal healthy coral and many fish.

Pulau Satonda

Pulau Satonda is a stunning ring-shaped island in the Flores Sea, with jungle slopes around a volcanic crater lake. Snorkel the reefs or hike the ridge for views of the still interior water, with monkeys and bats overhead. Formed by underwater volcanism, its crater is 86 m deep. It witnessed Mount Tambora's 1815 eruption, and a tsunami may have turned its freshwater lake saline. Local tradition says hang a stone on a branch to make a wish, then return to give thanks if it comes true.

It anchors Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, famed for the Komodo dragon: rediscovered in 1912 after long being a myth. Adults can reach 10 feet and 330 pounds; hatchlings are 20 inches. They hunt deer, goats, and pigs. Rangers must escort all visitors.

Pink Beach, Komodo

Pink Beach gets its rosy hue from tiny red coral flecks mixed with fine white reef sand. With a few shade trees, it's a great place to relax, snorkel, or dive in clear water. You may spot a striped clownfish among anemone tentacles or a grouper near soft coral. The reef is now legally protected, and its maturing corals are beautiful.

Darwin

Darwin, Australia's tropical north capital, is a uniquely isolated outpost near the equator, about 2,000 miles from Sydney and Melbourne. Named for Charles Darwin, it's known for nearby islands, Pacific flavours, and access to the Top End. Explore crocodile-filled waterways and Kakadu by airboat, relax in George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens or on Mindil Beach, and browse the sunset market for food and crafts. Its resilience is shaped by WWII bombing in 1942 and Cyclone Tracy in 1973.

King George River

The King George Falls is one of the Kimberley's most magnificent natural wonders. At 80 meters (260 feet), the thundering spectacle of twin cascades are among the highest in Australia. The river weaves through an amazing landscape of near vertical red rock formations and a parade of wildlife - carnivorous saltwater crocodiles and amazing birdlife, including giant raptors and the Brahminy Kite.

Swift Bay

Australia's Kimberley region holds some of the oldest rock art, a vivid testament to Aboriginal culture and traditions. At tranquil Swift Bay, a short zodiac ride and 250-meter walk lead to ancient caves and Wandjina art galleries. Here you can see two styles: Gwion Gwion, with long, slender human-like figures, and the rounder Wandjina style. One striking painting is on the ceiling, visible only lying down; the low roof may test claustrophobics, but the scale is unforgettable.

Buccaneer Archipelago Region

Off Western Australia, the Buccaneer Archipelago is one of the Kimberley's secrets: about 800 islands over 50 km², shielding the mainland from 12 m tides and the fast Yampi Sound. The tides create the reversible waterfall in Talbot Bay but also dangerous channels; sailors' graves testify to the risk. Sighted by Dampier in 1688 and named by Captain Phillip Parker King in 1821, it later drew pearling and iron ore mining, still active on Koolan Island.

For more recent history, Anjo Peninsula leads-via beach landing and a short hike or tidal walk around a lagoon-to a WWII site with an almost intact C-53 airplane wreck.
