Skagway
Skagway still captures the excitement of the Gold Rush: Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and historic downtown preserve the 1890s boomtown spirit. Beyond its history, it offers dramatic scenery-snowy peaks, pine forests, waterfalls, deep gorges, rivers full of salmon, brown bears, bald eagles, whales offshore, and nearby glaciers. Ride the White Pass & Yukon Route for one of the world's great rail journeys, or hike the Chilkoot Trail in the footsteps of gold seekers.

Icy Bay
Formed by the retreat of the Guyot, Yahtse, and Tyndall Glaciers, Icy Bay is a young fjord-like bay in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska. Though only about 100 years old in its present form, its icy blue waters, icebergs, and silent scenery feel timeless. Harbor seals, seabirds, marine mammals, and even grizzlies may appear, but August is still chilly at about 11°C/50°F.

Valdez, Alaska
Valdez, Alaska, "Little Switzerland," sits on Prince William Sound, ringed by the 5,000-foot Chugach Mountains and glaciers. It is the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and the most northerly ice-free port in the Western Hemisphere. Gold-rush boom in 1897-98, nearly destroyed by the 1964 earthquake, then rebuilt 4 miles away. Today its economy mixes oil, tourism, fishing, seafood processing, and shipping, with hiking, rafting, kayaking, glacier trekking, and winter sports.
