Perched on the mystical coastline of Iki Island, a place historically revered as a sanctuary of the gods, Iki Retreat by Onko Chishin offers a profound architectural dialogue between human shelter and the untamed beauty of the Genkai Sea. The property is conceived not merely as a hotel, but as a womb-like sanctuary where the boundaries between the interior and the horizon dissolve. Upon entering, guests are enveloped by a 'cocooning' atmosphere, achieved through a masterful interplay of warm natural wood wainscoting, soft textures, and a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes serenity. The architect has intentionally lowered the gaze by utilizing plank beds, inviting enveloping chairs, and low-slung Japanese dining tables. Combined with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, this design choice creates a surreal sensation of hovering directly over the water, allowing the ocean to act as the room's living canvas.
