Chalet Ivy Jozankei

Sapporo  •  Japan
A ryokan that takes the concept of relaxation to new levels, Chalet Ivy Jozankei showcases Japanese culture and hospitality in a spectacular natural setting. Situated in the lush forests of Hokkaido, Chalet Ivy Jozankei puts Japan’s northernmost island’s onsen centre-stage. This is a place to breathe pure mountain air, sink into warm, mineral-rich waters, and luxuriate in Japanese hospitality. Wherever you lay your head at Chalet Ivy Jozankei, you’ll awake to serene views across the landscape. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of your sleek suite, take in the splendour of the forests blanketed in soft snow in winter, or bursting with green life in summer. Spend the morning sipping coffee as the sun rises over the treetops, and the afternoon soaking in your private onsen tub. Like the bedrooms, which seamlessly blend the traditional with the modern, ZUI restaurant fuses classic Japanese cuisine with Western touches, using exquisitely fresh local ingredients.

Chalet Ivy Jozankei’s spa NIKUR is the place to zen out, with a modern gym to work up a sweat and a large shared onsen for soaking in the waters’ famed mineral goodness. Let therapists work their magic with herbal detoxification treatments and long, blissful massages. And come the evening, sip sake and taste traditional sweets from Hokkaido around open fires in the hotel lounge.

Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Sapporo  •  Japan
The fifth Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the world and the first in Japan, this mountain retreat opened in 2020 at the foot of Niseko Annupuri, in the forests and hot-spring country of Niseko Village, Hokkaido. With only 50 rooms and suites, the resort keeps its footprint small, trading scale for a privacy rare on a slope this storied. Everything turns on Kachou Fuugetsu: discovering yourself through nature as the seasons shift. Guest rooms make the view the protagonist, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame either the near-perfect cone of Mount Yotei or the long ridgeline of Niseko Annupuri. Interiors of natural timber and quiet tones answer the northern landscape rather than compete with it. The largest suite opens into two bedrooms, each with its own bath and walk-in closet, around a living and dining space for family or friends. On a winter morning, frost blooms across the glass as fresh snow settles on the peaks beyond, the warmth of the room set against the cold, clear air outside.

Dining is its own reason to stay. Yukibana, the all-day restaurant, looks out at Mount Yotei and builds its menu from Hokkaido farms, with fresh-baked breads at breakfast and seasonal meats and seafood by night. At Sushi Nagi, the itamae works in Omakase form, reading the day's catch into a few precise, deliberate pieces. As the day winds down, Ume Lounge waits by the fireplace, where an alpine mixologist mixes cocktails to pair with local craft beer or Japanese whisky. Then there is the water: mineral-rich natural hot springs, with open-air and communal baths, a private reservable bath, and an infinity onsen that seems to dissolve into the mountains. Skiing begins at the door across over 2,100 acres of terrain; in green season, two nearby 18-hole golf courses, horse riding, biking, and forest treks take over. The snow falls without a sound, the mountains simply stay, and the conversation here is only ever between you and nature.

The Westin Rusutsu Resort

Sapporo  •  Japan
Expansive alpine panoramas and deep Hokkaido powder define the rhythm of the seasons at The Westin Rusutsu Resort, where an all-suite concept offers one of Japan’s most spacious ski-in, ski-out experiences. Part of the Marriott portfolio under the Westin brand, the resort occupies a prime position within Rusutsu’s vast mountain complex, directly connected to ski lifts and year-round outdoor pursuits. All 210 duplex suites are designed with soaring ceilings and a split-level layout, bedroom above, living space below—while floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of Mount Yōtei and surrounding birch forests. The atmosphere strikes a balance between Japan’s understated natural aesthetic and the dependable comfort associated with an international wellness-driven brand. In winter, guests step straight onto powder-soft slopes; in summer, the landscape shifts to golf courses, hiking trails, and open-air adventure, revealing a different dimension of Hokkaido’s terrain.

Dining centers on regional ingredients, with the main restaurant offering Japanese-Western fusion cuisine and seasonal buffets that highlight Hokkaido seafood and warming specialties during ski season. An indoor pool, onsen-style bathing facilities, and Westin’s signature wellness programming provide restorative counterpoints to days spent outdoors. Integrated within the broader Rusutsu Resort complex, the hotel allows seamless access to ski runs, amusement attractions, and nature parks alike. More expansive and international in scale than a traditional ryokan, it functions as a contemporary mountain base camp, an address where wide-open space, reliable comfort, and ever-changing alpine scenery redefine the scope of a Hokkaido getaway.
