The Falklands Islands, about 480 miles northeast of Cape Horn, are the most accessible sub-Antarctic islands. John Davis, aboard the Desire, made the first confirmed sighting in 1592. Disputed by Britain and Argentina, Argentina invaded in April 1982, and Britain retook the islands in June.
