Seward
In Seward, Alaska, monumental scenery surrounds you: glaciers calve, whales cruise icy waters, and Kenai Fjords National Park rises with fjords, peaks, and the Harding Icefield. Visit Holgate Glacier by kayak or boat for striking blue-white ice and dramatic calving. Nearby Anchorage offers a stark city contrast, and the region also invites you to learn about the culture and heritage of Alaska's First Nation peoples.

Juneau
Juneau offers dramatic wilderness and glacier adventures. Mendenhall Glacier flows from the Juneau Icefield, just 12 miles from downtown, while Taku Glacier cuts deeply into the mountains. The city feels isolated, surrounded by forests and steep peaks, best seen from the Mount Roberts Tramway. Explore by sightseeing flight, kayak, snow-sled, or fishing. Bears, bald eagles, and humpback whales add to the spectacle.

Haines
Wild, raw, and unrestrained, Haines is Alaska at its most intoxicating. In the Inside Passage at the head of Lynn Canal, it blends snowcapped mountains, rainforests, glaciers, and scenic coastline with rich Chilkat Tlingit culture. Wildlife abounds: whales, bald eagles, trout, bears, walruses, and sea lions. Explore by kayak, bike, or hike. Visit Fort Seward for gold rush history, totem poles, and masks, see Chilkat weaving, and taste smoke-cured salmon.

Sitka
Sitka offers bears, wild landscapes, icy adventures, and rich wildlife in the Inside Passage: eagles, whales, sea lions, and Pacific salmon. See St. Michael's Church, a reminder of Russian rule before the 1867 Alaska purchase, and visit Sitka National Historical Park for Tlingit culture and totem poles marking the 1804 clash with Russians. Mount Edgecumbe rises like Fuji, Kruzof Island offers scenic hikes, and you can also fly, fish for king salmon, or dine on Northwest frontier cuisine.

Metlakatla
Metlakatla is the main settlement of the Metlakatla Indian Community on Annette Island in Alaska's Annette Islands Reserve, the state's only remaining reservation. In 2010 it had 1,405 residents. Mostly Tsimshian and largely lineage-based, its name means "Salt Water Passage." In 1886 William Duncan led Tsimshian followers from British Columbia to Alaska; after Annette Island was chosen, the U.S. granted it to them, and they founded New Metlakatla in 1887, later shortened to Metlakatla.
