Ambrym Island
Unlike Espiritu Santo's raised coral reefs and white sand, Ambrym is a volcanically active island with dark sand beaches. Known as the island of magic, it is the source of five local languages, part of Vanuatu's 100+ languages. In the lush community of Ranon, people perform the traditional Rom dance, preparing masks and costumes in secrecy for special occasions.

Pentecost Island
Pentecost Island is a lush mountainous tropical island in Vanuatu, 37 miles long, with no towns; most people live in small villages and grow food in gardens. Its strongest tradition is land diving, first shown internationally by David Attenborough in 1960 and later inspiring AJ Hackett's bungee jumping. Each Apr-Jun, southern villages build vine towers for boys and men to jump from, believed to ensure a good yam harvest and fertility.

Santa Ana
Port Mary is the bay beside Ghupuna, the main village in Santa Ana. A bright white-sand beach with large shade trees lines the shore in front of the tidy village. Houses are made from local materials, mostly on stilts. Islanders usually welcome visitors with traditional songs and dances from the three Santa Ana villages, and some locals sell souvenirs. The Solomons are also known for shell money and elegant carvings based on local stories and legends.

Rabaul
Rabaul, on New Britain's NE tip in Papua New Guinea, is a surreal travel spot set inside a flooded volcanic caldera with still-active vents. Mount Tavurvur devastated the town in 1994 with ashfall but caused no deaths. Its deep-water port supports some commerce, though tourism is limited by remoteness and volcanic risk. Rabaul also has major WWII history, including Japanese tunnels and a large wartime base. Slow travel here rewards visitors with dramatic scenery and exceptional diving.

Garove Island
Garove, part of the Witu Islands, once had a 5-km-wide caldera. It historically produced copra and cocoa, and still does. Most villages ring the volcano's exterior; steep cliffs leave only one settled area inside. At the caldera entrance's southwest corner, a promontory holds the school and Catholic church of Widu, the only village inside.

Kapingamarangi
Kapingamarangi is the southernmost atoll of the Caroline Islands and of Pohnpei State, and one of the few Polynesian outliers in the western Pacific. Though the atoll and lagoon cover over 70 km², its 33 islets have only 1.1 km² of land, with about 500 residents on three inhabited islets. Touhou is smallest but most populous, linked to Ueru/Welua by a causeway; south of it, Taringa/Taarin has the fewest residents. Many Kapingamarangi also live in Porakiet, Pohnpei.

Nukuoro
Nukuoro is Pohnpei's second southernmost atoll, about 480 km southwest of Pohnpei Island. Its nearly circular reef encloses a 40 sq km lagoon and about 46 islets, some man-made from coral, sand, and soil. Total land area is 1.7 sq km. The largest islet, Nukuoro Island, is the administrative center and home to about 400 residents; several hundred more Nukuorans live on Pohnpei. Formerly subsistence farmers and fishers, they have also tried small-scale pearl farming for 20 years.

Chuuk Lagoon
Chuuk Lagoon (formerly Truk Lagoon) is the main island group of Chuuk State, the largest of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. Centered in the Caroline Islands, its reef is over 220 km long; 41 islets lie on the reef and 57 islands and islets are inside the lagoon. Weno, on one of the larger volcanic islands, is the capital. The lagoon is famed for WWII wrecks: during Operation Hailstone, U.S. carrier planes sank 44 Japanese ships at Japan's major forward naval base.

Guam
Apra
Guam is a beautiful island with a rich cultural history. Apra Harbor, on Guam's west side, is a deep-water port and one of the Pacific's best natural harbors, formed by the Orote Peninsula and Cabras Island. It serves as both a U.S. naval station and Guam's main commercial port. Guam's Chamorro culture has endured despite colonization and war; its people, likely from Southeast Asia, were skilled seafarers and craftsmen. Since Magellan's 1521 visit, many foreign influences have shaped the island.

Saipan
The Northern Mariana Islands are 15 tropical islands in the western Pacific, about 120 miles north of Guam. Saipan, the largest island and home to the CNMI capital, is 12 miles long and 5 miles wide. Chamorro settlers arrived around 2000 BC. Magellan sighted the islands in 1521; the name changed in 1668 for Mariana of Austria. In 1986 Reagan made the CNMI a U.S. Commonwealth. Saipan's tourism centers on Garapan, beaches, marine life, WWII relics, bunkers, mangroves, and American Memorial Park.

Northern Mariana Islands
Pagan
Among the 15 Northern Marianas islands, Pagan is one of Micronesia's finest: biologically diverse, volcanically active (last major eruption in 1981), and geologically striking. It is actually two islands joined by an isthmus. Human habitation likely dates to about 1500 BC; official discovery was in the 17th century. Today only seven people live there. Eruptions have left lava slopes, light broadleaf forest, scrub grasslands, and swamps. The Marianas are notable for endemic birds.

Takamatsu
Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa, Japan's smallest prefecture. With about 420,000 people, it blends natural beauty and urban function. Its port was once Shikoku's main gateway until the 37km Seto Ohashi Bridge opened in 1988. Since the 17th century, the city has prospered under the Matsudaira family, who completed Ritsurin Garden: a 75-hectare villa garden with 13 hills, 6 ponds, and views of Mt. Shiun. Takamatsu is also known for fresh seafood and Sanuki udon.

Kochi
Kochi is a small, friendly castle town dating to the early 17th century, home to one of only 12 Japanese castles that survived the feudal era. Though half the city was destroyed in a 1945 bombing, the original castle remained, a fine Edo-period example. A lively market nearby offers local and international food, including sugar tomato and rice omelette. Kochi is also known for scenic landscapes, varied hot springs, beaches, katsuo no tataki, and the Harimayabashi love legend.

Itsukushima Island, or Miyajima ("Shrine Island"), is home to Japan's iconic Floating Torii Gate, a red gate in the Seto Inland Sea that appears to float at high tide. A UNESCO site and National Treasure, it marks the shrine complex built over water on walkways. Worship here dates to at least 600 AD; the present shrine dates to the early 12th century.
