Saguenay
At the gateway to the Saguenay Fjord, this city sits amid major parks and dramatic scenery. Explore waterfalls, forested fjord banks, and offshore whales; visit the historic 1800s pulp mill museum and Petite Maison Blanche, one of the few buildings to survive the 1947 floods. Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park is the main draw: a 60-mile Ice Age fjord, up to 270 m deep, with moose, wolves, belugas, orcas, and blue whales. Enjoy kayaking, cruises, hiking, biking, climbing, beaches, and spas.

Sept-Iles, Quebec
Sept-Iles, one of Quebec's northernmost towns, sits on a bay where the St. Lawrence opens toward the Atlantic, surrounded by dramatic coast, islands, beaches, and pine-lined shores. Once driven by heavy industry, it's now prized for its scenery, whales, and marine excursions. Visit Île du Corossol bird sanctuary, and learn about Innu heritage at the Vieux-Poste and Musée Régional de la Côte-Nord, which tells 7,000 years of local history.

Havre St. Pierre
Havre St. Pierre, Quebec's northernmost port, is the gateway to the Mingan Archipelago: surreal limestone monoliths sculpted by wind, water and ice along the north shore of the St. Lawrence. Cruise among the islands for views of balanced rock outcrops, minke whales, eagles and puffins, with Anticosti Island on the horizon. In town, enjoy quiet beaches, the boardwalk, a lighthouse, and Inuit cultural heritage.

Corner Brook
Corner Brook is Newfoundland's gateway to wild West Coast adventure: pine-scented mountains, roaring rapids, Viking trails, iceberg-blue waters, and whales. Set on the Humber River, it mixes a big paper mill with historic inns. Nearby, Humber Valley offers zip lines and white-water rafting; Gros Morne has the Tablelands and a dramatic fjord, plus the Captain Cook Trail. Finish with hearty Newfoundland food and local iceberg beer.

Saint Pierre And Miquelon
St Pierre
Almost due east from Cap-aux-Meules, Canada, you can reach St. Pierre, France's smallest Overseas Collective, in about a day's steaming. Its ~6,000 residents descend mostly from Normans, Basques, and Bretons; their French is closer to Metropolitan French than Canadian French. Basque survives in sport and a festival. The island has two Prohibition museums, Musée Héritage, and a guillotine-the only one ever used in North America. Find the Post Office by its clock tower shaped like a praying monk.

Sydney
Cape Breton's only city, Sydney, is a remote, scenic gateway to Nova Scotia, built around a former steel plant. Explore Membertou Heritage Park, the waterfront boardwalk, rugged coastlines, lighthouses, colonial houses, and the world's biggest fiddle. Nearby, the Nova Scotia Highland Village Museum, coal-mining sites, and the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck reveal local history. For military past, visit the restored Fortress of Louisbourg, a reconstructed French fortified city.

Charlottetown
Charlottetown, on Prince Edward Island, is known as the birthplace of Canada for hosting the 1864 Confederation Conference at Province House, where delegates from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI laid plans for the Dominion of Canada. The city celebrates this history at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, and it also has charm, coastal beauty, Anne of Green Gables links, great seafood, craft beer, and a relaxed island feel.

Trois-Rivieres
Where the Rivière St. Maurice divides into three channels, the town that grew up around it came to be known as Trois-Rivières (Three Rivers). Today it's a busy industrial hub but still retains pleasant shady streets and historical sites; a bygone iron and steel mill are worth a look. The town is also a good base for exploring the waterfalls and rock faces of the Parc National de la Mauricie, just 64 km (40 miles) away.
