Nuuk
Nuuk, Greenland's capital, is a surprisingly cosmopolitan hub where over a third of the country's people live. Its heart includes the Colonial Harbour, Nuuk Cathedral, and the Greenland National Museum, home to the Qilakitsoq mummies. Above are downtown apartments, shops, parliament, city hall, cafes, and Katuaq Cultural Centre. Despite its modern side, Nuuk remains distinctly Greenlandic, with local markets, the country's only traffic lights and university, and proud, welcoming residents.

Evighedsfjord
Evighedsfjord (Eternity Fjord) is a 75-km fjord northeast of Kangaamiut in southwest Greenland. It branches and bends repeatedly, seeming to go on forever; Qingua Kujatdleq Glacier lies at its southeastern end. At the northwestern end, a U-shaped valley has seven glaciers from the mountains. The glaciers peaked around 1870 and have since advanced and retreated. Peaks exceed 2,000 m, the fjord is up to 700 m deep, snowline is 1,100 m, and the area is one of Greenland's best heli-skiing spots.

Sisimiut
Sisimiut, Greenland's second city, is North America's largest Arctic city and a hub between the country's south and north. Home to a young, fast-growing population, it has been inhabited for 4,500+ years and grew into a trade center in the Danish Colonial Era. Sisimiut Museum preserves old buildings and artifacts. Known for skilled artisans, seafood processing, shipping, and KNI's base, it also offers hiking, fishing, sled dogs, snowmobiles, and the Polar Circle Marathon route to Kangerlussuaq.

Ilulissat
Ilulissat Icefjord, the "birthplace of icebergs," produces nearly 20 million tons of ice a day. "Ilulissat" means "icebergs" in Kalaallisut. The town is cold but often calm, has about 4,500 residents, and is Greenland's third-largest after Nuuk and Sisimiut. Locals say sled dogs may be nearly as numerous as people. It also has a local history museum in the former home of polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Pond Inlet, Nunavut
Pond Inlet, on northern Baffin Island, is a small mostly Inuit community of about 1,500 people. In 1818, explorer John Ross named a nearby bay after astronomer John Pond. Known as one of Canada's "jewels of the North," it has scenic glaciers and mountains, many Dorset and Thule archaeological sites, and a long Inuit hunting history. It is also a major center of Inuit art, especially printmaking and stone carving.

Beechey Island
Beechey Island is a small island off Devon Island, separated by Barrow Strait. Parry first visited it in 1819; Lt. Frederick William Beechey named it for his father, artist William Beechey. It was important in Arctic exploration: Franklin camped there in 1845-46, and the remains of three crewmen were found there. Belcher used it as a base in 1850, and Amundsen stopped there in 1903. It became a Territorial Historic Site in 1975 and a National Historic Site of Canada in 1993; now in Nunavut.

Devon Island
Devon Island, Canada's sixth-largest island, was first seen by Europeans in the early 17th century, but the Thule culture had lived there for centuries before, leaving qarmat homes that show over 800 years of human habitation. The area also has fossils of corals, crinoids, and nautiloids. Across Lancaster Sound, Prince Leopold Island is an Important Bird Area and migratory bird sanctuary, with large colonies of Thick-billed Murres, Northern Fulmars, and Black-legged Kittiwakes.

Dundas Harbour, Devon Island
Austere and remote, Devon Island is one of the closest Earth analogs to Mars. Its rocky, cold, dry terrain and a 14-mile crater host NASA researchers in summer. Mostly uninhabited, it's the world's largest uninhabited island, though a RCMP post closed in 1951. At 320 miles long, it is Canada's sixth-largest island. Discovered by William Baffin in 1616 and later mapped by Parry, it also contains Thule remains from around 1000 AD. In Inuktitut, it is Talluruti, "a woman's chin with tattoos."

Lower Savage Islands
The Lower Savage Islands are a small group of islands off of the southeastern tip of Baffin Island, and a common location for polar bears to be found during the summer months. With plenty of land to roam while giving each other a wide berth, plus opportunities to feed, it seems perhaps bears can be found here as the ice vanishes with the summer season's warming temperatures.

Monumental Island
Monumental Island is a splinter of ancient metamorphic rock in Davis Strait, named for Sir John Franklin. Surrounded by drifting Greenland icebergs, it is a key den for polar bears, including mothers with cubs, who stay ashore until summer ice returns. Harp seals are common and often curious near boats, and Atlantic walrus haul out on the island's bluffs. Few places in Nunavut offer such rich Arctic wildlife in such a dramatic setting.
